There is a lot more to Queensland than the barrier reef and surfers.. There's Hervey Bay for a start. I like this place as it's great to go sailing with the whales.
It's straight forward to charter a yachy and sail around the Great Sandy Straits. To hire a yacht, try the Fraser Island Rent-A-Yacht (Tel: 61 7419 41416 /
http://www.rent-a-yacht.com.au. And the best bit is that a boating license is not required.
While you are there, you will soon find out why it has the tag as "whale-watching capital of the world".
Fancy fishing? Well the water around Hervey bay is considered a fisherman's paradise. There's barramundi, bass, golden trevally and even longtail tuna.
Finally but not least there is Fraser Island, the largest sand isalnd in the world (184,000 hectares of sandy beaches, lakes and stunning rock formations). A drive along the eastern beach, which is an officially recognised highway with an 80km/h speed limit is a must do.
